
According to a ScienceDirect research review titled “Jigs and Fixtures in Production: A Systematic Literature Review,” jigs and fixtures—though essential—can also be a limiting factor in modern, flexible manufacturing systems.
The paper notes that in automotive body shops, jigs and fixtures can represent up to 29% of total investment. While necessary for securing, aligning, and stabilizing components, traditional jig designs may struggle to meet evolving demands for adaptability, especially in high-mix, low-volume production environments.
