As explained in Kingsun Machining’s article “Understanding the Difference Between Jigs and Fixtures,” the two terms are often used interchangeably—but they serve distinct functions in the manufacturing world.
Jigs are used to guide cutting tools (like drills), ensuring precise hole placement and alignment. Fixtures, on the other hand, simply hold the workpiece in place without guiding tools. This difference is critical when designing tooling for high-volume or automated production.
