As detailed by The Engineering Choice in their article “What Is Jig Boring Machine? – Types and Working”, the invention of the jig boring machine revolutionized the way holes are positioned and machined with precision. Originally developed in both Switzerland and the U.S. at the end of World War I, jig boring helped transition manufacturing away from reliance on drill jigs and toward more accurate and efficient processes.
The jig borer is a highly specialized tool primarily used to precisely locate and machine hole centers, especially in tool and die making. While it resembles a milling machine in structure, its function is far more refined. Unlike a milling machine designed for heavy material removal, a jig borer excels in precise drilling, boring, and reaming where accuracy and repeatability are paramount. Its advanced controls and micrometer-style readouts allow positioning to an impressive accuracy of 0.0001 inches (2.5 microns).
