As highlighted in the article “Jig Grinding On A Machining Center” by GCK on Modern Machine Shop, a groundbreaking solution to enhance CNC machining efficiency is introduced. Traditionally, additional machines were required for processes like jig grinding, leading to increased setup times and reduced throughput. However, the innovation, the Ray KSK 1000 coordinate grinding head, eliminates the need for a dedicated jig grinding machine.

The Ray KSK 1000 is compatible with 40- or 50-taper, horizontal or vertical machining center spindles, seamlessly extending the capabilities of CNC machining centers. This attachment allows for jig grinding, ID grinding, and profile cam grinding without the necessity of removing the workpiece from the machining center.

Featuring a self-contained U-axis slide with an impressive accuracy of 0.001 mm (0.00004 inches), the grinding spindle is positioned for a fine finish. With three high-frequency spindle options (600W, 1,200W, and 1,500W), offering speeds from 7,500 to 100,000 rpm, precision and versatility in machining operations are ensured. Transitioning from machining center mode to grinding takes just about 15 minutes.

The control system of the Ray KSK 1000 provides 31 programs for different feed rate and time combinations, allowing for various grinding operations. This innovation is not intended to replace production jig grinding machine tools but serves as a cost-effective alternative for shops or tool rooms with occasional jig grinding needs.
